چکیده

Homo Reciprocans: Survey Evidence on Behavioural Outcomes This paper complements the experimental literature that has shown the importance of reciprocity for behaviour in stylized labour markets or other decision settings. We use individual measures of reciprocal inclinations in a large, representative survey, and relate reciprocity to real world labour market behaviour and life outcomes. We find that reciprocity matters, and we find that the way in which it matters is very much in line with the experimental evidence. In particular, positive reciprocity is associated with receiving higher wages and working harder. Negatively reciprocal inclinations tend to reduce effort. Firms do not pay lower wages to individuals with strong negatively reciprocal inclinations. Instead, negative reciprocity increases the likelihood of being unemployed. Looking at broader measures of success, in terms of number of close friends, and subjective well-being, we find that positively reciprocal inclination are associated with greater happiness and ability to sustain friendship relations, with the opposite being true for negative reciprocity.

Homo Reciprocans: Survey Evidence on Prevalence, Behavior and Success

Homo Reciprocans: Survey Evidence on Prevalence, Behavior and Success Experimental evidence has convincingly shown the existence of reciprocal inclinations, i.e., a tendency for people to respond in-kind to hostile or kind actions. Little is known, however, about: (i) the prevalence of reciprocity in the population, (ii) individual determinants of reciprocity, (iii) the correlation between posi...

Managing Homo Sapiens

A The evolutionary process in general, and human evolution in particular, are basic to comprehending Homo sapiens. Human evolutionary heritage predisposes human behaviour, and that is what all management systems (including Total Quality Management) seek to affect via training, coordination, and motivation. The evidence of behavioural biology and evolutionary psychology points to two huma...

Is Equality Pass e? Homo Reciprocans and the Future of Egalitarian Politics

Recasting egalitarianism to tap these sentiments should be high on the...

How Effective Can Ex Post Destruction Alleviate the Hold-up Problem?

We first investigate whether or not ex post destruction can possibly alleviate the hold-up problem in a one-shot game between a supplier and a buyer. The answer is yes but only when the buyer believes that the supplier might be a Homo reciprocans agent with sufficiently strong propensity for reciprocity. Under incomplete information with informed supplier, investment is made feasible by the “mi...

Homo-psychologicus: Reactionary behavioural aspects of epidemics.

We formulate an in silico model of pathogen avoidance mechanism and investigate its impact on defensive behavioural measures (e.g., spontaneous social exclusions and distancing, crowd avoidance and voluntary vaccination adaptation). In particular, we use SIR(B)S (e.g., susceptible-infected-recovered with additional behavioural component) model to investigate the impact of homo-psychologicus asp...
